Perfect Harmony

Joined SCVO as a Member on 29 April

Perfect Harmony is a Charity that provides live interactive musical entertainment, in the form of concerts for the elderly, and those affected by physical and/or mental frailty. These concerts are provided free to Care Homes, Hospitals, Sheltered Accommodation Facilities, Day Centres and Special Needs Centres throughout the Scottish Borders. Since 2013, Perfect Harmony has given about 5 or 6 free concerts per annum to the 30 or so facilities that have enrolled as Facility Members of Perfect Harmony (£150 Annual Fee). Their willingness to continue to subscribe provides the members of Perfect Harmony with positive encouragement and justifies their belief in the benefits of this provision. Concert attendance is usually about 20 people. It is widely recognized that provision of musical entertainment has great mind stimulating benefit and enhances the lives by way of enjoyment, well-being, participation, rekindling memories, communication, social relations, and reducing isolation.Academic and anecdotal evidence confirms this belief. Musicians, staff, and concert receivers are convinced of the benefits that these concerts bring, particularly to those vulnerable people suffering from Dementia, Alzheimer’s, loneliness, isolation and other debilitating conditions. Much has been written by experts in this field highlighting the importance of this kind of therapy. For example, the University of Stirling's Dementia Services Development Centre's evaluation states that the concerts have the following effects:• having a positive impact for all those engaged in concerts• bringing enjoyment and fun into care settings, being particularly beneficial in relaxing and improving the mood of the recipient audiences• bringing back memories and encouraging reminiscence; encouraging singing and dancing• improving communication and social relations between members of the audience, staff and family and friends and helping to develop a sense of community within the care setting• raising the mood and morale of family and friends and staff and enhancing the overall atmosphere of the establishment.Experts have stated that the part of the brain that processes music is less affected by the deterioration caused by Dementia. Consequently it explains why the live musical therapy as provided by Perfect Harmony is so successful. This interesting factor is observed first hand by Perfect Harmony musicians during their concerts.Funding is required to reimburse the musicians. 30 Venues receiving 6 concerts at approx £100 = £18,000Less Subscription income 30 x £150 = £4,500Income to be sought from grants etc = £13,500 perannum
