Aims & objectives

To provide ways in which churches of all christian denomination in Edinburgh, their congregations and individual members can take practical action, through donating money & foods & volunteering, to support the resettlement of homeless people in the community. Fresh Start runs a service for people who have experienced homelessness and have recently been offered a tenancy of their own. With the assistance of volunteers, Fresh Start offers both practical and emotional support through a variety of integrated services that are intended to help people manage the transition to independent living and to prevent the cyclical nature of homelessness.

Job description

The Trainee PAT tester/ Warehouse person will assist with PAT testing both in-house and on site at customer’s premises and with warehouse duties within Fresh Start.

Fresh Start is a small team therefore it is essential that you are a willing team player with a flexible approach, who will contribute to the efficient running and development of the organisation as a whole.

Main Duties:

Electrical goods testing

•Assist with the running of our workshop, testing electrical and domestic appliances for re-use;

•Complete visual, PAT (Portable Appliance Test) and function tests on electrical goods as required;

•Assist with completing PAT tests for customers, including churches, charities, social enterprises, commercial businesses, housing associations, and private landlords throughout the central belt of Scotland;

•While PAT testing, replace plugs, fuses and cables where necessary;

•Label individual appliances accurately;

•Maintain accurate records of tests completed using PAT testing machine and specialised software;

•Assist with safe and organised storage of tested and untested appliances in the warehouse;

•Assist with responsible disposal of unwanted goods.

Warehouse Duties

•Assist with management of warehouse i.e. ensuring all goods are stored safely, passageways are clear, excess stock and rubbish are dealt with, bins are out for weekly pick-up (this list is not exhaustive);

•Unpack and sort goods when necessary;

•Assist with internal and external maintenance work if necessary;

•Assist with collection, distribution and disposal of goods.

Health & Safety Issues:

•Attend relevant training when requested;

•Become familiar with and follow Fresh Start’s Health & Safety Policy and Procedures;

•Contribute to the safe and efficient running of Fresh Start’s warehouse and Services;

•Ensure that the warehouse remains clean and clutter free at all times.


•Attend relevant meetings;

•Meet regularly with Senior PAT Technician to monitor progress;

Familiarity with all Fresh Start policies and procedures

•Assist with other Fresh Start services as required;

•Be prepared to work towards a Select qualification in PAT testing;

•Assist with any other reasonable tasks.

Person specification

Good customer service skills

A willingness to work towards a recognised qualification

Knowledge of electricals would be an advantage but not essential

Good team player, willingness to be adaptable and flexible working in a small organisation

Willingness to travel throughout Edinburgh and surrounding area (reimbursements will be made where necessary)

Accuracy in your work and good record keeping

Awareness of others working environments and keeping area of work tidy and compliant with all health and safety regulations and procedures

Commit to the aims and values of Fresh Start

Ability to work independently, using your own initiative once training complete

Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines

The post requires the successful candidate to undertake training to work towards a SELECT qualification in PAT Testing, including the completion of an exam This is a 12 month post, with a probationary period of 3 months
