Job description

The Garden Assistant will play a key role in maintaining the garden at North Edinburgh Arts, an award-winning greenspace that is used by a wide range of people in the local community for a variety of creative and horticultural purposes.

The focus of the post is to support the Garden Coordinator to ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of the garden.

The Garden Assistant will also support North Edinburgh Arts's work outwith the garden in other outdoor spaces locally.

Main Duties include:

• Garden maintenance: weeding, pruning, tidying and litter picking, grass cutting, strimming, watering, and any other task as required and as directed by Garden Coordinator.

• Maintenance of NEA's other outdoor spaces: temporary growing spaces on local brownfield sites and planters in shopping centre.

• Managing the composting system.

• Maintaining and tidying shed and storage areas, including tools.

• Assisting with preparing activities for groups using garden.

• Assisting with growing vegetables and fruit.

• Assisting at garden-related events.

• Setting up and clearing away outside café seating, sweeping and tidying seating area, raking sandpit and opening up children’s water tap.

• Developing horticulture and landscaping knowledge.

• Keep an up to date knowledge of NEAs’ programme of events and activities.

• Working with and supporting garden volunteers and work placements.

General duties

• To undertake any other duties relevant to this post as required.

The post will be managed by the Garden Coordinator but the post will work alongside another garden assistant on a daily basis.

Additional information

Annual leave entitlement is 25 days pro-rata. Holidays must be taken in discussion with the Garden Coordinator. We are open to considering a part-time post for young people with disabilities or health issues
