Call for Scottish charities to apply for national awards

The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) is calling for charities across the country to apply for their annual charity awards. Now in its 12th year, the Scottish Charity Awards highlight the best, most innovative and effective charity organisations and individuals from the past year, and celebrate those who make a difference in our communities. There are eight award categories – Charity of the Year, Charity Champion, Demonstrating Digital, Pioneering Project, Terrific Trustee, Leading Light, Celebrating Communities and Cracking Campaign – with the winners to be decided by a panel of judges and announced at a glittering awards ceremony on June 14th at the EICC in Edinburgh. All finalists will then be entered into the running for the People’s Choice Award (sponsored by Charities Aid Foundation), giving members of the public a chance to vote for their favourite finalist to win. SCVO received an overwhelming response last year, with hundreds of applications and votes cast for those who do amazing and life-changing work, and event organisers hope to encourage even more applications this year. Lucy McTernan, acting Chief Executive of SCVO, said: “The Scottish Charity Awards features some of the most inspiring organisations and individuals in the country. Last year, the winners were selected for their work in ensuring more people in Scotland receive the support they need and also for raising awareness of key issues. “It is my favourite work night of the year and never fails to remind me why we do what we do. I have no doubt there are huge numbers of organisations who are carrying out vital work across the sector and would urge them to take the time to apply to give their charity and everyone involved the recognition they deserve.” David Duke, Founder and CEO of Street Soccer Scotland, was delighted to win the ‘Charity of the Year’ award in the 2017 ceremony: “When we were shortlisted at the SCVO Charity of the Year awards, we were honoured and humbled to be included with some fantastic organisations such as Who Cares Scotland, The Yard and Hope Kitchen. The work they do is so important and makes a huge difference to the people they support and serve. We never expected to win, but it was a lovely compliment to our team of staff, volunteers and supporters who work so hard to try and make a difference. "It was also a nice way to recognise the courage and resilience of our players, who despite facing many challenges in their own lives, show real strength and determination to get involved in our programmes and find new purpose on and off the pitch. Since 2009, our Social Enterprise and now, our foundation, has been determined to make a wee difference, and we have been lucky to work with a range of organisations who provide different elements of support to the people we serve, and hopefully through recognition, we can build partnerships and help more people change their own lives for the better.”
