Be a hero & show a little kindness today

Apparently this week has been designated as Random Acts of Kindness week. I hadn’t realised until someone pointed out why there was free fudge in the office kitchen. It fits well with the plea made by one commentator on Safer Internet day earlier this week to fill the internet for good things. For any sceptics out there you may think, “Not another awareness week” but awareness days and weeks work. They offer a clear news hook to cover issues that might otherwise never see the light of day. I love the thought of random acts of kindness. It’s the same kind of thing as pay it forward which has been around for a while but seems to be growing. Pay it Forward day is coming later this year and the concept of creating a ripple effect to make the world a better and happier place is powerful.

The internet allows us to do this - sharing ideas and connecting people on issues that interest them. It's far beyond what some dismissed as clicktivism a few years ago. You only need to look at the success of Change.org to see the impact of individual’s using a platform to raise issues they care about leading to collective action. Only last week one outraged individual started an online campaign to help a disabled pensioner who was robbed. Over £300,000 was raised in just over a week before the fund was closed. My challenge now is to think what I will do for Random Acts of Kindness week. I think it needs to go beyond my effort for #GivingTuesday: heroes 2               What are you going to do to spread a little kindness today?
