Small grants can create a big impact.
How small I hear you ask?
Since 2015, grants of between £1k and £10k have been available to third sector organisation across Scotland to help them mitigate the impact of welfare reform, poverty and social inequality and the work they have been doing is incredible and making a huge impact to individuals and communities. These grants are from the Community Capacity & Resilience Fund (CCRF) which SCVO manage on behalf of Scottish Government.
As the CCRF fund manager I have had the pleasure of working with some amazing organisations whose passion for, and commitment to the work they do is truly inspiring as is their understanding of the needs of the communities they work in. You can read about the projects we have funded here.
The CCRF uses a flexible, supportive and light-touch approach to assist local community-based organisations to pilot innovative and creative projects and increase their capacity to mitigate the impact of welfare reform, poverty and social inequality.
It delivers funding directly to the frontline with upfront payments, providing resource and capacity to organisations with unique insight into the needs of their communities. The way the fund is managed gets results and is valued by those organisations who have received grants.
This is not a biased view from me – it comes from feedback we have received such as:
- A funding strand that seems to understand and respond to social need.
- SCVO knows the challenges that welfare reform brings and this was evident in their understanding of what the projects were trying to do. The scope to try different things – not always successfully – was liberating and encouraged different approaches and styles of addressing issues.
- Light touch indicates trust which makes it less stressful
If you work in a third sector organisation that is tackling the impact of welfare reform, poverty and social inequalities and have an annual income of £250k or less are reading this and thinking…this is the type of funding I have been looking for, then the good news is CCRF is open for business!
