The future of the third sector – leadership in a changing world (Thursday)

Hosted by SCVO and Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors

Date: Thursday 21 February
Time: 9.30am – 12.10pm
Room: Meeting Academy

The third sector in Scotland changes people’s lives for the better every day but it’s clear that the environment we operate in is changing at a faster pace than ever before – particularly in the way society and the economy operate.

As a result, many organisations in the third sector are looking to rethink their mission and values and – most critically – their business/operating model. How do you adapt for the future? How do you crystallise your vision, mission, roadmap and actions to deliver on your ambitions?

This year SCVO and our partners are pleased to announce our new Gathering leadership programme for Chief Executives, Directors, and senior & emerging leaders in the third sector. The audience for the event will also include a cohort public and private sector leaders who work closely with the third sector.

The event will begin with a keynote address and question & answer session with Tom O’Hara, a serial IT entrepreneur who through his technology group Kick ICT has created Scotland’s biggest independent IT services group focused on small and medium sized enterprises.

Tom will share his own experience – including working in and with the third sector – of delivering transformation change in organisations to improve organisational performance.

The main session of the programme will focus on: Identifying your organisation framework: a tool for enhancing impact.

Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, one of the world’s largest philanthropic service organisations, will then lead and work with participants through an interactive session inspired by iconic management expert Peter Drucker’s seminal article ‘The Theory of the Business.’

Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors’ Philanthropy Framework helps organisations increase their effectiveness in light of the challenges and complexities facing society today. Specifically, the Framework is a tool that guides organisation leaders through reflection and analysis of how they operate, the societal context in which they work, and how they deploy their monetary and non-monetary assets, in order to optimise their effectiveness.

The session will include practical exercises and in-depth discussions to help participants reflect on their organisations’ inner workings, culture, structure and how they carry out their work. The session will also focus on the key role an organisation’s chosen time horizon plays in shaping an organization’s governance, culture, and operating and strategic approaches. Under the guidance of workshop leaders Donzelina Barroso, Director of Global Philanthropy and Olga Tarasov, Director of Knowledge Development, session participants will gain a new perspective on how they make decisions, interact with others and how they choose to use their capabilities and resources.

Participants will leave this session ready to conduct a more in-depth analysis that will empower them to align purpose, resources and capabilities to deliver most effectively and meaningfully on their mission, strategy and goals SCVO – in partnership with Strathclyde University Businesss School – will be holding a follow up leadership event open to all participants attending the Gathering events in early May 2019 – more details to follow.
