Job description

The Café Assistant will be responsible for:

•Providing high quality food and drinks service to The Open Door’s customers as directed by the Café Supervisor

•Helping to prepare, serve and sell hot and cold food and drink while ensuring a friendly, welcoming and inclusive café atmosphere

•Working with other staff and volunteers to guarantee all centre users receive high standards of customer service

Main Duties

•Preparing and presenting the public with food and drink and providing good quality customer service at all times

•Ensuring the kitchen and café areas are welcoming, presentable and safe at all times

•Helping set up and clear away the workstation each day with cutlery, napkins, condiments, milk, water and cups

•Setting up, cleaning and clearing the tables and counter area, outside café seating area, clearing crockery to kitchen, using the dishwasher and putting away clean items

•Taking orders and serving customers with food, drinks and other café products

•Ensuring daily checks and opening and closing procedures are carried out as instructed and that all food hygiene and health and safety procedures are adhered to

•Participating in daily stock checks and handling deliveries

•Developing and maintaining a good knowledge of the products on offer and to advise customers on their choices

•Assisting in preparing and serving refreshments at private functions and corporate events when necessary

•Being aware of The Open Door’s core programme of events and activities

•Processing sales through the till, taking money and issuing change and maintaining a high level of accuracy and security with all cash handling procedures.

•Supporting café volunteers and work placements to fulfil their role within the café as appropriate

•Helping with cafe fire evacuation procedures within the café area when required and as directed by The Open Door’s staff

•Good communication skills

•Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative

•Ability to work under pressure in a customer facing environment

•Maintain high levels of personal hygiene and a professional appearance

•Reliable and punctual

•Experience of dealing with the public

•Willingness to work flexible hours when needed

•Willingness to undertake training
