Job description

You will report to the Hatchery Co-ordinator and work at all times under his supervision. Duties will include assisting with some or all of the following, depending on the requirements for particular types of seasonal activity.

1. Hatchery work

Broodstock capture, including netting, electro-fishing, handling and transporting fish

Cleaning hatchery equipment

Maintaining hygiene and bio-security procedures

Routine checks on water flow and temperature, numbers and condition of eggs/fry

Keeping written records of all routine checks

Daily care of eggs/fry including removal and disposal of unfertilised eggs

Feeding fry

Maintaining grounds of the hatchery

Transporting fry to burns and stocking out in appropriate densities and situations

2. Habitat work

Removing bankside trees and bushes including use of loppers/pruners where appropriate

Removing potential barriers to migration including fallen trees and use of winch where appropriatewhere appropriate

Construction of fences and watergates

Planting trees including using stakes and tree-guards

Control of invasive non-native species such as Himalayan balsam

Bankside strimming

Additional information

Some of the duties will be performed outdoors are physical in nature and are performed in remote and rugged countryside The types of work to be undertaken are dictated by the seasonal requirements of the job.
