Callander Youth Project on behalf of Callander Social Enterprise Place
Callander was named the first Social Enterprise Place in Scotland in September 2018.
A small town on the edge of the Trossachs, its economy depends largely on tourism and day visitors. While relatively close to Stirling and other population centres, it is poorly served by public transport and remote from many other services.
The community has responded over the years with social enterprises that meet some of the lacking services. Examples include a community-run leisure centre, a five-star hostel run by a charitable trust that trains young people in hospitality, a thriving art and craft shop led by a cooperative of local artists and one of Scotland’s top tourist attractions with the Steamship Sir Walter Scott as its centrepiece at Loch Katrine.
